Noah, “The Unknown”

Imagine the sun is shining, the grass is dry, and it hasn't rained in a very long time. Suddenly, God tells Noah a big secret: a giant flood is coming. God gives him a massive "To-Do" list, build a boat the size of a football stadium!

The bible tells us that:

"By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family."

Hebrews 11:7

We often teach Noah as a cute story about a big boat and a rainbow, but for a child, the "unknown" is one of the biggest sources of fear. Noah had to trust God for something that had literally never happened before (rain and a flood). This lesson teaches our kids that even when they can't see what's coming next, they can trust the One who holds the blueprint. To shift from "What if something bad happens?" to "What has God said?" We want to teach them that Obedience is the best cure for Anxiety.

In this lesson, your "littles" will learn:

  • Faith over Feelings: Noah felt the sun and saw the dry ground, but he acted on God’s Word. Teach them that we don't have to feel brave to be brave.

  • The "Slow Build": Courage isn't always a giant leap; sometimes it’s just hammer-and-nailing one small task at a time. Help them see that being brave is a daily habit.

  • God Provides the Safety: Noah didn't have to be a master sailor; he just had to stay inside the Ark God designed. Remind them that staying close to God is the safest place on earth.

Lets break it down!

Engage:

Get your child moving and thinking with these quick "on-the-deck" prompts:

  • The Hammer Test: Pretend to hammer a big nail. Clang! Clang!

    • Ask: "Noah hammered for a long time. Do you ever feel like quitting when a job is hard? How did Noah keep going even when he was tired?"

  • The "Silly" Question: Imagine the neighbors laughing at a boat in the dry grass.

    • Ask: "The people thought Noah was being silly. How does it feel when someone laughs at you for doing what is right? Is it okay to be 'different' if you are following God’s orders?"

  • The Wave Wonder: Imagine the boat starting to rock. Whoosh! Splash!

    • Ask: "When the big waves hit the boat, do you think Noah’s tummy felt fluttery? If God is the one who built the boat and shut the door, do we have to worry about the waves?"

  • The Animal Peace:

    • Ask: "If God can make a lion sit still on a boat, can He help your heart stay still and calm when you’re worried?"

Apply:

Now it’s time to build your own "Ark of Courage." Here is how you can be like Noah this week:

  • The "Feelings vs. Orders" Rule: Noah felt the hot sun, but he followed God’s word about the rain.

    • The Mission: When you feel scared (like of the dark or a new place), tell your heart: "I don't have to FEEL brave to BE brave. I just have to obey my Captain!" Following God is more important than how we feel.

  • The "One-Hammer" Habit: Noah didn’t build the Ark in one day; he did it one board at a time.

    • The Mission: Being a hero isn't one giant jump; it’s a "slow build." Today, find one small brave thing to do. Maybe it’s saying "sorry" first, or trying a new food, or praying out loud. Every brave choice is like hammering a new board onto your Ark!

  • The "Safe Zone" Secret: Noah wasn't a world-class sailor; he was just inside the boat God told him to build.

    • The Mission: When life feels "wavy" or loud, remember that your "Safe Zone" is staying close to God. You stay inside His Ark by talking to Him in prayer and listening to His words. As long as you are with the Captain, you are exactly where you need to be!

Repeat & Reinforce:

  • The Edible Ark:

    • Build a boat on a plate using pretzel sticks and a "glue" (peanut butter or frosting). Courage isn’t built all at once; it’s built one board at a time through small, brave choices.

  • The Storm Bottle:

    • Fill a bottle with water, blue dye, and glitter. Shake it to create a "storm," then watch it settle. Our feelings can get "swirly" and scary, but we can stay calm by trusting God’s Word until the storm passes.

  • The Craft Stick Ark:

    • Glue popsicle sticks onto a paper boat. Write one "brave habit" (like Praying or Obeying) on each stick. Following God’s instructions every day is how we build a strong heart that won't leak when life gets "wavy."

  • The Rainbow Shield:

    • Create a tissue-paper suncatcher on a paper plate rim to hang in a sunny window. The rainbow is God’s "signature" on His promise. It reminds us that God’s light is always stronger than the dark clouds.

Closing Thought:

Noah didn't need to know how to stop the storm; he just needed to know how to use his hammer. Sometimes, our kids (and we!) get overwhelmed by the "Big Clouds" of life, new schools, loud noises, or scary news. But God doesn't ask them to control the weather. He just asks them to stay inside the "Ark" of His love and take the next brave step.
