Ask, Seek, Knock!

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?

If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

Matthew 7: 7-12

This passage is so much fun for little ones because they can really understand it! The ideas are simple and relatable: asking, seeking, knocking. Things kids already do every single day. And Jesus asks some rhetorical questions that are a little outrageous and even a bit silly… but that’s exactly the point! Let’s break it down with our littles in a fun and engaging way. Here’s how:

Engage

Read the verse together in “fill-in-the-blank” style:

  • “Ask, and it will be _____. Seek, and you will _____. Knock, and the door will be _____.”

    • Let your child shout out the missing words: “given!” “find!” “opened!”

    • Celebrate their answers and explain briefly: “That’s exactly what God promises when we pray!”

  • Make the rhetorical question come alive:

    • Continue reading: “Which of you, if your child asks for bread, will give him a rock? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?”

      • Pause and ask your littles:

“If you asked Mommy or Daddy for a yummy snack, would we give you… grass?”

      • Let them laugh and answer “Nooo!”

      • Explain: “That’s what Jesus is showing even we, imperfect parents, know how to give good gifts to our kids. How much more will God, our perfect Father, give us what’s truly good when we ask Him!”

Apply: Connect to everyday life

Now that your littles have laughed, shouted the fill-in-the-blanks, and played with the silly examples, let’s bring it into real life:

  • Ask Boldly:

    • Explain: “Just like you can ask Mommy or Daddy for help, you can ask God for anything that’s good. God loves when we talk to Him!”

    • Everyday example: Ask God for help with learning new things, healing your little boo boos, sharing your toys, or being kind to a friend when it’s hard.

  • Seek Actively:

    • Show: “God wants us to seek Him, to make time for Him, to look for ways to do what’s right, just like a treasure hunt. When we seek Him, we find His guidance.”

    • Everyday example: Make time to read your bible, listen/watch to your favorite Jesus show. Look for ways to help at home, or notice opportunities to encourage a friend.

  • Knock with Persistence

    • Explain: “Sometimes doors don’t open right away. That’s okay! God’s timing is perfect. Keep praying and trying, He will answer in the best way.”

    • Everyday example: Keep practicing a skill, keep helping someone, or keep praying for a problem, knowing God sees and hears you.

Repeat & Reinforce

Make it stick!

  • Ask-Seek-Knock Prayer Hunt:

    • Help them write a few simple prayer requests on small slips of paper e.g

      • “Help me be brave at school.”

      • “Help my friend feel better.”

      • “Help me be kind today.”

    • Fold them up and hide them around the house or the backyard.

    • Let your child explore and find each hidden slip. Each time they discover one, pause and pray a short, simple prayer together.

    • After praying, place each slip into a special jar labeled: “God Answers Our Prayers!”  to build faith and anticipation.

    • Whenever something happens big or small related to one of the prayers, CELEBRATE! Kids LOVE this part. It helps them see God’s goodness in real, tangible ways.

Closing Thought

Remind your child that they can come to God anytime. When they ask, He listens. When they seek, He leads. And when they knock, He opens the door at just the right time. Our littles don’t need perfect words they just need to come to God with simple faith knowing he is a loving Father. He loves their tiny prayers, their big questions, and their seeking hearts, there is nothing our Father can’t do.
