Jireh, My Provider
God promised a man named Abraham that he would have a son with his wife Sara even though they were very old! God kept His promise, and Abraham’s son was born and named Isaac.
When Isaac had grown into a boy, God tested Abraham’s faith and obedience by asking him to offer his beloved son as a sacrifice. Abraham obeyed and took Isaac to the mountain. Along the way, Isaac asked, “Where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” and Abraham answered that God would provide.
When they reached the mountain, Abraham built an altar. Just as he was about to sacrifice his son, the angel of the Lord stopped him and said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy… now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” Abraham then saw a ram caught by its horns and offered it instead of Isaac.
“So Abraham called the name of that place, The LORD Will Provide (YHWH Jireh); as it is said to this day, ‘In the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.’”
Genesis 22:14
This story might feel big or even a little scary at first, but it’s really a beautiful reminder of who God is. Long before this, God had already promised Abraham that his family would grow into a great nation, as numerous as the stars and the sand! So this moment was never about taking something away, it was about learning to trust a faithful God. Even as Abraham walked up the mountain, he believed God would keep His promise, confidently telling his servants that both he and his son would return.
For littles, this lesson gently introduces the idea that God is always good and always keeps His word, even when we don’t understand what He’s doing. It reassures children that God sees, cares, and provides exactly what is needed at the right time. Teaching YHWH Jireh helps lay a foundation of trust, reminding children that they are safe in God’s hands and can rely on Him in every season.
Engage:
As you read the story, invite your little one to imagine Abraham and Isaac walking together up the mountain. Help them picture Abraham holding Isaac’s hand and trusting God with every step.
Pause along the way and wonder together:
“How do you think Abraham felt as he walked with Isaac?”
“What do you think it means when Abraham said, ‘God will provide’?”
“Have you ever trusted mom and dad even when you didn’t understand what was happening?”
“How do you think Abraham felt when God provided the ram?”
Apply:
Trust God when things feel confusing:
Help your little understand that sometimes we don’t know how things will work out, but we can trust God just like Abraham did. When something feels hard or uncertain, remind them: “God will provide.”
Practice obedience in small ways:
Talk about simple ways they can obey, listening to parents, sharing with others, telling the truth, even when it’s not easy. Explain that obedience shows we trust God.
Look for God’s provision together:
Point out everyday ways God provides: food on the table, a place to sleep, a kind friend, or help at just the right moment. Say out loud, “Look how God provided for us today!”
Repeat & Reinforce:
Footprint Activity
Trace your child’s feet on paper or cut out simple footprint shapes. Create a path leading up a “mountain” or across the page. Let your child place the footprints one by one as you talk through the story.
Say together: “We can trust God with every step.”
“God Will Provide” Peek Craft
Fold a piece of paper in half. On the outside, build an altar using small wooden sticks or craft sticks. When you open the paper, reveal a ram sticker inside.
As you open it together, say: “God will provide.”
Provision Path Stones Activity
Gather a few small stones or paper circles. Write simple words or draw pictures on them (food, family, home, heart). Lay them out like a path. Have your child step or move a small figure from stone to stone.
Say together: “God is my provider”
Star Promises Activity
Cut out a simple star shapes (or use star stickers). Let your child place the stars on a piece of paper
Say together: “God promised, God did it!
Closing Thought:
God is our provider, YHWH Jireh. Just like He provided for Abraham at the perfect moment, He provides for us too. Even when we don’t understand what God is doing, we can trust Him with every step, because He always keeps His promises and lovingly cares for His children.
